(South Lake Tahoe, CA) – Barton Health continues its expansion of medical imaging technology, investing in the latest equipment that enhances services, expands care, and improves the patient experience. The acquisition of a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) system has equipped Barton to now offer advanced MRI prostate and breast screenings. In addition, Barton’s Nuclear Medicine Suite recently completed a $1.2 million remodel to accommodate a new hybrid SPECT/CT scanning system that provides a new view on health issues within the body.

CT scans at Barton are now enhanced Single Photo Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) with the addition of hybridized SPECT/CT technology. This powerful and highly sensitive nuclear medicine imaging system creates a 3D image that helps physicians pinpoint areas of concern within organs, bones and soft tissue. SPECT/CT improves the detection of health issues by creating better images that target areas of care in a fraction of the time.

With the acquisition of the new MRI machine, Barton’s Medical Imaging department now offers Breast MRI and MRI-guided breast biopsies. Primarily used as an additional tool in mammogram screenings or ultrasound of the breast, this technology benefits patients with a higher-than-normal risk of breast cancer, have been diagnosed with breast cancer, or are undergoing chemotherapy. Breast MRI is also the preferred method of screening for women with dense breasts, and can be used to determine leaks or ruptures in silicone breast implants.

Prostate MRI screening is now available at Barton as well. This test screens for prostate cancer; from detection to evaluating its extent in the body, while helping diagnose enlarged or infected prostate glands. Because of Barton’s advanced MRI technology, this process no longer requires an endorectal probe – the number one deterrent reported by men for completing this procedure. Prostate screening is now easier, faster, and more comfortable; providing new incentive for male patients to complete this critical exam.

“As a non-profit healthcare system, Barton invests in leading technology that directly benefits our community and expands access to high-quality, local care,” said Dr. Clint Purvance, President & CEO at Barton Health. “We are proud to offer these advanced medical imaging services for our patients, and provide industry-leading care here at Lake Tahoe.”
