Video Capsule Endoscopy

Barton Health Offers GI Procedure with Video Technology to Aid in the Diagnosis of Digestive Issues

(South Lake Tahoe, CA) – Barton Gastroenterology now offers video capsule endoscopy, a procedure utilizing video technology to diagnose problems and abnormalities in the digestive system. Each year, millions of people in the United States seek care for digestive issues. Video capsule endoscopy allows a gastroenterologist to examine the entire gastrointestinal (GI) tract with little to no discomfort to the patient.

During a video capsule endoscopy, a wireless camera that fits inside a tiny, disposable capsule the size of a vitamin is swallowed. ‌As it enters the body, the camera clicks several thousand pictures along its journey through the bowels. These images are recorded on an external device and are used to view the digestive tract to detect and diagnose gastrointestinal conditions such as tumors, ulcers, and bleeding.

“While traditional endoscopy, colonoscopy, and CT scans remain the gold standard for GI exploration, they cannot easily reach mid sections of the small intestine, which can be up to 26 feet long. When necessary, video capsule endoscopy empowers your care team to view the entire intestinal system, providing non-invasive exploration of the longest organ in the body,” said Dr. Azadeh Brumand with Barton Gastroenterology. “We are delighted to have the ability to diagnose hard-to-reach issues while providing additional comfort to patients.”
